Duffryn Junior School
Report from Ann Owen,
Language Co-ordinator

We were delighted to be asked to work with students from Duffryn High School to shadow the Kate Greenaway Awards.

After the success of last year's team work we were looking forward to viewing, discussing and voting on the books shortlisted.

Up to top menu   We were not disappointed. The year 3 pupils were ready to give their opinions and preferences about these very different books. They were very aware of the differences in style of the illustrations in the books and enjoyed discussing these features with the year 12 students who were competent at questioning - and containing - our exuberant and enthusiastic year 3 pupils who were bursting to explain what they thought of these lovely books.

These year 3 pupils have worked with big books as well as a variety of different fiction and non-fiction genres for the past two years, so they have been fed a rich diet of good texts and they had plenty of ideas which they were confident to explain.

Since our visit to the High School the year 3 pupils have been writing up their thoughts and choices as well as drawing and painting their favourite illustrations. They have also had the opportunity to use the "state of the art" computers in the High School's brand new Learning Resource Centre to enhance their experiences.

We have enjoyed working with the High School staff and students. It has been a worthwhile and rewarding experience, which has undoubtedly sown the seeds of a lifelong love of books for all concerned.
