Why so many young adult books?
Exciting though it is to be part of the Carnegie Greenaway Shadowing challenge, I can't help but be disappointed at the large amount of young adult titles in the Carnegie selection. This rules out my year 7 and 8 avid readers in taking part fully. They are understandably crestfallen. I have told them that if they get permission from their parents I will let them read the restricted titles but I am aware there are sensitive issues under discussion and they may not be mature enough to understand? We will however do our best and with the group a little larger than we've had before its going to be a lively discussion we have during book week voting!

Our Results!
Our popularity, shadowing the Carnegie/Greenaway books has increased gradually over the years and I am hopeful that next year will be even better! Interestingly our opinions varied drastically this time from the National Vote! i felt very sad that there, Once again was a book on the short list that was suitable for only over 16's. This meant that none of my book group were able to read it? However, I thoroughly enjoyed Beck and thought that perhaps it should have been entered for another award other than the Carnegie? Our favourite book turned out to be The Smell of Other Peoples Houses. Our secondary groups choice of the best illustrator was also completely different to the Primary choice, not surprisingly? Primary chose A Great Big Cuddle and secondary chose The Marvels. This reflects their maturity, obviously.

The start...
Well, here we are again.. Shortlist in, and advertising for shadowers. So far I have only a few takers and they are in the lower years. This might mean that one of the books, 'Beck', that has a suggested reading age of 16+, doesn't get read by them if I cannot recruit from the older year groups? Anyway.. we have a while to go and the posters have only just been put up so fingers crossed! We are an All through Academy so Primary will be getting involved with the Greenaway selection too!
