C.S.I. (Carnegie Shadowing Initiative)
Our favourite Carnegie
As this was our last meeting before the big announcement last week on the winner. We took time to reflect on how our experience of shadowing the CKG prize had been for all of us. We have all enjoyed it immensley.
We also took a vote on our favourite Carnegie book on this year's shortlist... The Wall came a very close second, as we enjoyed the voice of the protagonist and all the themes that made us think about things in a different way.
Our absolute favourite was The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks. We sympathised with the main character and felt that Brooks was really talking to teens. The language was emotive and though we found the book scary, it was, in our opinion, an outstanding novel.
We are really looking forward to finding out the winners next week!

We had a good, in depth discussion about the shortlisted Greenaway titles. Our top three were "The Day The Crayons Quit" as we enjoyed the humorous illustrations, bright colours and the letters in envelopes on the last page.
We also enjoyed "I Want my Hat Back", especially the crab and the way the big fish's expression changed just by his eyes moving. We also liked the muted colour pallette.
Our favourite book though was "Where my Wellies Take Me" as we loved the illustrations. It was so varied and detailed and felt very British. We thought the details like the map and uses of different types of paper made this an outstanding illustrated book for children and adults of all ages.

We had a great discussion on the merits of some of the books on Monday. Liar and Spy, Ghost Hawk and All the Truth That's In Me are all proving very popular so far. Reviews for these have been submitted, and there will be more to come!

Another swaggie discussion
We officially changed our name to Crystal Palace Swaggie Readers today... It was a unanimous vote.
We also discussed two of the books that our readers had completed... Jack had read "Ghost Hawk" by Susan Cooper and Meena read Kevin Brooks' "The Bunker Diary". Both books got a big thumbs up and were eagerly recommended to other members of the group.
My recommendation was "The Wall" due to it's beautiful prose, fabulous characters and wonderful sense of place.
Look out for reviews coming soon!

Brownies, books and blogging...
Today during our session we enjoyed some home baked chocolate brownies and looked at some of the Greenaway shortlisted books. There wasn't a clear favourite, but it was fun to look at them.
We spent some time editing our web pages and then went back to the shortlisted books.
Everyone went away with a shorlisted book this week so there will be reviews here soon... watch this space!
We were also feeling inspired to write some poetry and get all artistic. Lots more to see from this small but energetic group!

Monday 17th March was our first meeting...
We discussed what we had been reading recently, some of the past winners of the Carnegie Prize and the inagural longlist.
We also had a look at what the Carnegie Medal was and what we would be doing in our shadowing group.
We even managed to squeeze in a discussion about books vs. films... the general consensus that was the books are better than the film adaptations!
