TGS BookMunch
Surbiton,

An exciting week ahead
This week at BookMunch, we have a lot to be excited about. Next week we are so lucky to have a Skype session booked with 'Salt to the Sea' author Ruta Sepetys! We have been discussing her brilliant book and some of the questions that we would like to ask her. Is it really true that she lives in a treehouse? We are also excited about taking part in 'The Pitch' book trailer competition. We talked about which books we would like to create a trailer for and what we could include, but we're not going to give away our ideas here! Look out for our trailer next week...

Thinking about THE PITCH -
So... what book shall we feature in our group film this year? Mmmm lots of discussion over our lunches.. Bone Sparrow - because most of us has read it and most of us loved it. But .. RailHead would be fun to do ... lets get a black out screen or film it in the dark room - so we are like the tunnels in the K Gates.. travelling through time. The group has trouble making up their minds...

We don't want miserable stories!
Ok - the Short list isn't out yet, but we've been given quite a few new books that are contenders and from what we've seen they have a lot in common. 1: A parent is dead or dying 2: A friend is dead or dying 3: The narrator is dying 4: They have an illness that makes them fear dying Please can we have a happier book to cheer my soul and lighten the life of teenagers!

Thoughts from a lunchbox
Listening to all the comments during our lunch hour - TGS Book Munch had lots to say.................. • ‘Thurston is a beautiful cross between Banksy, Charlie Chaplin and Brendon Urie’ - You must read Fire Colour One! .................... • I am only reading ‘There will be Lies’ at school .. because at home I have to finish ‘Crystal Magic’.. .. Witches and spells........................ • There’s this number thing in ‘The Ghost of Heaven’ that no one will understand until they’ve read the book… SO READ THE BOOK PLEASE SO I CAN TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT!................................ • Yes miss.. Yes miss...I am still reading ‘One’ … slowly because I don’t want to miss out anything… and at home we speak Romanian. ...................................... • No, I can't even open the Patrick Ness Book...I can't ...I don’t want to read it yet.. Why? ???? because I’m still thinking about another book and I can’t get that out of my mind ................................................................ • In between mouthful of Ham & cheese on white bread … No Comment was heard. .................................................................. Overall there was a lot of book talk... lots of noise and chat... a very noisy library.. ..............................................................

Cosmic's Florida versus Dahl's Veruca Salt - The Oompa loompa song..re released in TGS' Library
It has been very difficult to convince Y9s to read Cosmic - they think it's just too childish for them.... But Mrs M loved it and tried her best to get Book Angels (Y7/8s) and Bookedup+ (Y9/10s) to remember how Roald Dahl's Charlie & Choc Factory had similar appeal, perhaps without Dahl's daft & wonderful language, but nevertheless... children's characters that were damaged by bad parenting... Result of this in depth analysis? BookAngels listened politely... but Bookedup+ just began singing the Oompa loompa song...! ************************************************* Anyway....back to .the BIG Question is.....?? WHO will be the 2nd at TGS to finish the challenge?

Book Consumption?
2 members are just reading all the first chapters - and claim that after exams they're read one of the books... True to say they're not avid readers ..so still a challenge Mrs M said that was ok .. it's one way to build up those slack reading muscles! well gotta go.. too many books - so little time! Happy reading ....Bibliodd

Book Angel Fatima has run out of books!
The Y7/8s are not able to read some of the more 'teenage' books - and thus Fatima hasn't yet matched Rachel's record (only MRS M has done that)/.. . but Fatima has read....4 out of the 7... and 2 from last year's list... so she's BookAngels champion so far!

We have a winner! Rachel isTGS's top Shadower 2009
Rachel R - is the first to achieve the Challenge of 7 books ...but not in 7 weeks - no she did it in only 4! Rachel's breakthrough was her 4th book - Patrick Ness's - ~Knife of Never letting Go - read in a day and a night! - very tired girl at school next day though! This was quite an amazing feat for Rachel - last year she didn't finish all the books. She hates to be told what to read! Tactically, Mrs M promised Rachel that if she finished the other 3 books - Rachel would be the first to get her mits on Ness's sequel.. due out the following week! So despite.. her distate for 'Cosmic' and her dismissal of 'Airman' and scant effort with 'Creature of the Night'-- Mrs M - secured her the new book (The Ask and the Answer) the day after it was published.. . Happy Rachel.... but this book was another one that Rachel appeared to swallow whole.. Now sadly, Rachel must wait until 2010 to finish the trilogy. Rachel's enthusiasm is infectious -- now staff and students emerge bleary eyed trying to emulate Rachels' book 'eating' rate. Happy Reading = Bibliodd
