Blast from the Past! - 'Northern Lights' review, by Mr Breeze
By far my favourite book in Phillip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' series, 'Northrn Lights' is a brilliant story. We first meet Lyra, her daemon and are introduced to the mysterious and fantastic alternate reality of Pullman's imagination. What strikes me most about this book, and the reason why I like it so much, is the sheer imaginative power of the setting. From the armoured polar bears and witches of the north, to the world of Jordan College , Oxford. This book is bursting with unique ideas. Pullman's writing is also quite clear and easy to follow, but also balanced with dark undertones - for example the horrible Mrs Coulter! I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend this book, and I can understand why it won the prize in 1995. A fantastic read!
