Cheam School
Newbury, Berks

2010
This year we are doing things quite differently. For the first time Year 4 are taking part in the Greenaway Shadowing in their Library Periods. It's been lovely sharing these wonderful picture books with these wonderful children. We are not running a specific Carnegie group this year. Being such a busy school, it's hard to find a time to meet. Instead the books are available and children from Years 4-8 are choosing to take the books (or buy them for themselves). It's great to see so many people involved.

And then there were 3...
Only 3 of us here today. Rest at Thorpe Park on choir trip - lucky them. We looked at Harris Finds His Feet - good but not the best of the picture books. Then watched some videos on the shadowing site - Thomas Docherty, Keith Gray. Not a lot happened today - but Lyonel came for the first time! Let's hope he comes back next week.

Just finished!
I've just finished reading 'Airman' - the last one I needed to read. I absolutely loved this book. We were talking the other day about whether anyone still wrote good adventure stories - well, here it is! I'm so glad I came to this after reading 'Black Rabbit Summer' and 'Creature of the Night' - it lifted my spirits completely. While I appreciate there is a place for gritty realism, reading is also about escapism sometimes. I, personally, don't want to read about the dark things in life all the time. Sometimes I want something that diverts me from modern life. 'Airman' certainly did that and I really think Eoin Colfer should be congratulated for bucking the trend. Having read them all, I think 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' is my favourite of all - a really original idea and gripping story-line. 'Ostrich Boys' and 'Airman' were also fantastic. Would like to think one of these will win.

Creature of the Night
George came to see me at the end of the day to say how much he's enjoying Creature of the NIght. I think this is the fastest he has ever read a book - this is the beauty of the Shadowing. He clearly thinks the book is something special - just shows, what do I know!

Greenaway Day
Really good meeting today. Spent a lot of time looking at Greenaway books - Little Boat and Mollie and the Night Monsters. We loved both of them but Little Boat was a particular favourite - have added it to our reading barometer. We had a good look at our homepage before the judging and managed to see the video which is finally there. Fingers crossed now!

Reading buddies
Heard today that one of our group has had an email from his reading buddy at our neighbouring school. Hopefully this is the start of something fun. I just finished 'Ostrich Boys' last night - which I loved. Only one book to go now - 'Airman' - have really enjoyed my reading so far. And as for the Greenaway books - always a joy.

Finally...
The video is finally in place. Spent ages last week with our Head of ICT but we couldn't get the video to work. Spent ages with our IT Technician and have spent ages this evening. Now finally it is on the site. It's been great fun developing our group page but the video has been very frustrating. It's a good idea but the process needs to be simpler than this. At least I can show the video to the group at our meeting tomorrow. Have emailed details of our page to the competition so now it's just a question of keeping our fingers crossed!

Now you see us!
After a couple of false starts have managed to get our photo on the homepage. Still no luck with the video - have contacted Carnegie so am waiting for some help. When I checked my email this morning, the first message I had was from George telling me what he thought of the opening of 'Creature of the Night'. Good way to start the day.

Just keeps on growing!
This has been an exciting week. At the meeting yesterday, lots more people came - I've never had so much interest in Carnegie before. At our meeting we took a photo and made a short video for our home page. I spent a long time yesterday trying to get both on our home page but neither would work - very frustrating. Need to try and find some help. Seven of the group decided they'd like to have reading partners with The Kennet. Have sent message to librarian so we're waiting until she has her meeting tomorrow. Lots of reading going on - have to say I'm not enjoying the books as much as some years - very bleak. We are enjoying the Greenaway books though - such a wide variety.

Peter's Savage again
Peter just popped in to return The Savage. He's read it in less than 24 hours! He really enjoyed it and said the ending was really unexpected. We've put a question on our poll about the bully's name - Mrs H had to type it out 3 times before she got it right.

Carnegie Reading Partners
Just had a lovely conversation with the librarian at The Kennet School. She had lots of advice and ideas and was also keen on the reading partners idea. When we next meet, we need to decide who'd like to take part in this. We also talked about getting the groups together. This could really be an exciting new part of our shadowing.

Peter - The Savage!
On my way to the Staff Room this morning I bumpled into Peter. He's nearly finished 'The Savage which he only took yesterday. This is what I love about the Carnegie - all these conversations about books.

We have contact
Contacted our nearest schools yesterday. Had a message back from the librarian at one of them. She's very keen to set up reading partners too. Will ring her today to see what we can do. This could be an exciting new part of our shadowing activity

Meeting 2
We read bits of The Savage - great beginning. Peter's taken it to read before next meeting. We also put a question on the Poll (please try it, people out there) and jazzed up our home page.

Lots of excitement after first meeting
We gave out the books, then looked around the new pages on the website. We watched the interview with Patrick Ness then Alexa and Peter took his book. We're looking forward to our next meeting when we will really jazz up our group page.
