Miss MacDermott's choice of winner
We haven't sent in a shadowing vote because we couldn't decide on one book that we all felt fulfilled the criteria well. My choice for the winner is Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd. I think in tone, twists, suspense and characterisation it is head and shoulders above the other choices. The situation and atmosphere, that are based in real events are ever-present in the narrative but without burdening the story with too much thought and description. The interweaving of Meg's story with Fergus' s leads up to an effective climax in which all the mysteries are resolved. It is a really satisfyingly plotted book with a palpable tension all the way through it.
