Pinewood Reading Group
A new year of shadowing
Can't wait to start a new year of shadowing the Greenaway. It's good to see William Grill on the short list and some other favourite illustrators. First meeting of reading group will be on Thursday afternoon. I just have to decide which of the fantastic shortlisted titles to share with the group first!

A new year's short list
This year there is a brilliant selection of books for the Carnegie and Greenaway. Some of our year 8's will be reading the Carnegie short list and our reading group on a Thursday will be looking at the Greenaway list. Cant wait to get started!

The Summer term is brilliant for lots of reasons, the swimming pool is open, the sun is shining and there's loads of sport but it is also the term we shadow the Greenaway and Carnegie Book Awards in Reading group. Can't wait to get started this summer!

Paper dolls in the library!
We plan to read 'The Paper Dolls' and make our own strings of dolls to go around the library. Hope to get some book characters in amongst them and see how many the children can recognise!

We all enjoyed this story although some of us thought it was a bit sad. We liked the illustrations as well.

This week we are reading 'Puffin Peter'. I wonder if the children will connect this story with the nursery rhyme about the two birds, Peter and Paul.

There are no cats in this book
I love this book and hope the children do too! We all liked the first book by this author, which was short listed last year. We will be reading this together today and posting reviews.

New set of books, new term!
The short listed books are on order and the titles look interesting. I hope lots of children will sign up for Reading Group this term, looking forward to some good discussions. We haven't yet agreed with the judges over the winner - maybe this year?

Two more books to go!
This week we will be reading the last two books on the Greenaway shortlist. Next week the winner will be announced. Before we open the envelope we'll do a final vote for our favourite book and see if we agree with the judges.

Cloud Tea Monkeys
We didn't have time to write individual reviews for this book as it was a much longer story to read. We all loved the illustrations and thought they were very finely drawn. The faces are most expressive and the colours are brilliant. They make you feel the heat of India. Could this be a winner?

Not sure what the children will make of JIM. Mini Grey has visited Pinewood and her illustrations are great but it will be interesting to discuss what age this book is for.

Ernest by Catherine Rayner
I love this! Hoping the children love it too when we read it today in Reading Group.

First book read!
The Reading Group have read and reviewed the first book, Me and You by Anthony Browne. Anthony Browne has won the Greenaway twice before and his books are very popular. This book was good but the general feeling was that it wasn't one of his best and probably not a winner - we might be wrong....

Eagerly awaiting the winner!
All the books, bar one, have been read and reviewed and we are eagerly waiting to hear the winning title announced. My favourites are Satoshi Kitamura's tale of Millie's Marvellous Hat and Viviane Schwarz's book of cats. The group enjoyed 'The Dunderheads' probably because the story was of more interest to their age group. On Thursday at Reading Group we will be having a Greenaway cake as we discuss the winning title!

Most of the group enjoyed this book and even if they didn't like the illustrations, agreed they matched the story. There was plenty to talk about and discuss. The wacky story reminds me slightly of the classic picture book, Mr Magnolia but I am unsure whether it will 'stand the test of time' in the same way. Looking forward to reading our next book with the Reading Group on Thursday.

Today we are going to read our first book, Crazy Hair by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. It will be interesting to see what everyone makes of this unusual book. Reviews will be posted soon!
