De La Salle St Helens
Group status: We are very much wide awake and active; today we visited a local Library in Moss Bank for 2 hours and we divided into 3 groups of 10 persons and did 3 workshops planned by the Borough Library Team .
We are a reading group named "The Extreme Readers" and we are composed of members from Years 7,8 and 9 & 10. We meet every Tuesday lunchtime. We are joining in the Shadowing of the Carnegie Award for the fifth time and enjoying it very much in a borough-wide project with other schools in the St. Helens Authority. On June 24th.all the schools will meet together and have a special day where we try and outguess the London judges. We will enjoy a full day of various workshops, activities such as performance poets and authors .At the close of the day our St. Helens winner is announced from all the participating schools' favourites and with much booing and hissing when the London winner is announced. Over recent years we have had the exciting pleasure of meeting many young people's authors; we either travel to meet them with other North West schools at a central venue or the authors actually come into our school and entertain us here. Authors of the calibre of Joseph Delaney, Sophie McKenzie, Mal Peet, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Philip Caveney, Celia Rees and Cathy Hopkins as well as Gervaise Phinn, Sherry Ashworth and David Almond have been met this way.
