The Smell of Other People's Houses
The Smell of Other People's Houses is set in a small town in Alaska in the early 1970s. The story consists of several interconnecting narratives which cross over and unite, telling the stories of 4 teenagers. Everyone is dealing with their own problems- Hank needs to escape, Ruth needs to get home; Dora needs to break from her family, Alyce needs to realise her family understand her. The teenagers voices are strong and their journeys all include an amount of self discovery and reconciliation with the past. For all of the characters the end of the book is the start of another journey. Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock is a wonderful storyteller and the Smell of Other People's Houses is a beautifully structured exploration of growing up.
