The Wolves of Currumpaw

My favourite Greenaway book. Based on a famous true story, the tale of a wolf called Lobo, which inspired a Disney film called the Legend of Lobo. Set in Mexico in the late 1800's when settlers, who were rising in numbers, were hunting wolves that roamed the landscape. Lobo was the leader of a notorious pack of wolves that evaded capture. A bounty was offered and a British born hunter Ernest Seton took up the challenge. At first everything he tried failed but he eventually caught Lobo by killing his mate, Blanca. Lobo finally gave up the chase and was caught easily in a trap. When Seton saw Lobo in the trap he could not bring himself to kill him so instead he took him back to camp where Lobo eventually died. We discover that after Lobo died Seton was a changed man and never killed again. He even wrote a book that led to the protection of wild animals. A wonderfully illustrated book.
