The Stars at Oktober Bend

The Stars At Oktober Bend is a compelling story about a young girl (Alice) who has suffered a brain injury and is living with her Grandma and brother Joey. Although Joey is the youngest of the family, Alice looks at him as an older brother and he does take on the responsibility of looking after her and their Grandma. The book is also about a young boy (Manny) who has taken refuge at Oktober Bend from the war-torn country of Sierra Leone. The way the chapters are written portray the characteristics of the character whose point of view it is. For example, when the chapters are written by Alice, it has lots of short poems. Overall, I think that this is a great book that also tackles the problems of today- understanding people's health problems that make them how they are and also refugees who are looking for a safe place to live. But it is also a story about love and friendship.
