Tilly, Carnegie and Cake
Salt to the Sea
I usually love historical fiction and this was unlike anything I'd ever read! First, despite there being four characters and four different perspectives, the author made the storytelling work, without it being confusing and every story was likeable for different reasons and made you want to read on.
Also, it was such a poignant story, that has been forgotten in history. It made me want to go and research the history behind the Wilhelm Gustloff. There were so many beautiful parts, and the author wasn't afraid to explore alternate endings for each character, which was unusual as many books always have happy endings. The ending was so emotionally moving, and touched me. I also love her writing style, as it was complex and could have different ways of interpreting what she is saying
