Mrs. Hazlehurst, Idsall School
The Hate U Give
Finished 'The Hate U Give' two days ago, and I thought I would give myself time to ruminate.
Was it a truly original story? No. It reminded me of 'That was then, this is now' and other stories of that ilk.
Style - very. It contrasted the two halves of Starr's life well. The language was 'y'all dig it' which some of our pupils didn't dig and found it difficult to decipher.
Plot - good, strong, I enjoyed it.
Characterization - Most of the characters were interestingly developed, crashing and banging into each other. However, I felt that Starr's little brother was a bystander in the story and Hailey's lifestory could have been interrogated more.
Will this story stay with me? Not sure. Will I ever refer to it as a good read? Yes. Will I refer to it as one of the best reads and worthy of a Carnegie medal? No.
