The Smell of Other People's Houses
The Smell of Other People's Houses, has a similar format to Salt to the Sea, as both books feature four characters, whose lives become entwined after a series of life-changing events. However, the characters in the Smell of Other People's Houses are so much more engaging with Ruth being sensitive and relatable, Dora being shy, Alyce being adventurous and Hank being a caring character, with too much responsibility forced upon him. And secondly the characters stories aren't dotted about with one page chapters, meaning I understood the plot better than Salt to the Sea.
The Smell of Other People's Houses is not the sort of book I'd normally pick up, but for those interested in the "Slice of Life" genre, with a sprinkle of historical context, then this book is most certainly for you. And for those who are not interested in this genre, do not be too judgmental when reading the first few chapters.
