Mrs P, St John Fisher RC High School

Saint Death

This book is like Marmite, you either like it or you don't. Although a fan of Marcus Sedgwick I found the story very gritty and real and it is not for the younger reader. The main character Arturo has been working on getting into America from Mexico since he was a child and like his compatriots is stuck behind the border fences in poverty. Gangs and corruption contaminate the shanty town he lives in. When his old friend Faustino turns up on his doorstep he is forced to help him which will ultimately be his own undoing. Interspersed with the story are snippets of information and facts about migration from Mexico to America and corruption nationally. This is a book that will horrify and educate.
