After the Fire
After the Fire is a book about a religious cult who put all their faith in one leader: Father John. He is seen as a trustworthy, compassionate leader who everyone looks up to because after all, he is one of the Lord's messengers. However, Moonbeam sees through this facade Father John has put on.
My favourite character is Moonbeam who is the main character in the book. She is my favourite because she goes against the rest of the Lords Legion and she is the one who works all the lies out. I also like Moonbeam because I can relate to a teenage female like myself. This really made me feel like I was part of the book when I was reading it.
For me, there was only one part in the story that I really didn’t see coming. I feel other readers might have suspected it but then not expected other parts. The book comes across differently for different people depending on who you are. The unexpected part for me involved one of Moonbeam’s enemies: Luke when they were in the hospital after the fire.
My favourite part of the book was when Moonbeam finally stands up to Father John in a way the average teenager today would not dream of doing. This made me really understand the circumstances she was experiencing that lead her to do such a fatal thing.
I think the way the book was written was brilliant and there is nothing I would consider changing to make it better. However, there is a strong religious aspect which could offend some readers.
The book itself was quite a depressing book but, I had a feeling it would be a happy ending so I wanted to keep reading it to find out what happened. I did find myself very emotional whilst reading the end, almost like I was Moonbeam realising life isn’t going to be so bad after all.
Would I recommend this book? Definitely! For teenagers and adults, it’s an emotional roller coaster where you really connect to the characters and feel for them.
Overall, I loved the book and I am on the lookout for more books by Will Hill, the author of this amazing book.
