I loved this book! I felt so much empathy for the main character as you follow Beck's story from a child to a young man. A harrowing but informative book. There has been some controversy over whether it should be a shortlisted title in the Carnegie Children's Book Awards, I think with fair warning (possibly on the front cover)of mature themes most 14+ years could read it. Did Mal Peet need to write one of the scenes so graphically? - I think he did. It made the reader understand just how horrible and nasty the other character was. It gave gravitas to other storylines in the book too. Could this be the controversial winner? Maybe...
