Beck is a novel about an orphaned boy and his travels, hardships and adolescence. He starts of in an orphanage where he is fed well, but is bored and has no future. We then experience events from his point of view as he is put on a ship to Canada with the other boys. There he finds many homes as well as guardians but none of them both last and suit him, so he continues travelling, seeking acceptance and belonging.
I enjoyed this book, mainly because it is fast paced- what with the main character never staying in one place. It is well written, and handles big issues like racism and rape well. The author created some very emotional moments, and the ending did not feel at all rushed, like many other books.
I'd rate this book a 10/10!
