Salt to the Sea
'Salt to the Sea' is a truly thrilling and sensational novel written by Ruta Sepetys. It tells a story of a group of civilians fleeing Nazi Germany (all from different backgrounds). Despite the fact I have never read one of Sepetys' books before, I found this book one of the most well structured and immersive books I have ever read. It was both mature and interesting. I personally think that the title is particularly suited to the book as 'salt to the sea' suggests that the death of the many civilians at sea whilst fleeing Germany were insignificant in themselves, but all contribute to this terrible historic event. Ruta Sepetys has perfectly created and moulded the main characters throughout the book giving us a sense of unknown and mystery - a definite highlight of the book. 'Salt to the Sea' does not just tell a story, it also commemorates and signifies the terrible deaths that the Nazis, Soviet Union and the Allies inflicted upon innocent people.
