Salt to the Sea
Salt to the sea is a novel by Ruta Sepetys. Set in the Second World War, it tells the story of four refugees fleeing the Russian advance; Joana Vilkas, a nurse, Emilia Stożek, a polish girl, Florian Beck, a German deserter and Alfred Frick, a German soldier. As the story progresses, we learn more about the characters, their families and how they came to be on the journey to freedom.
This book is very moving, and although the characters start on different paths, their paths all intersect.
It is also an adult book, and one I would only recommend to people of 14 and over. There were some adult notions within the book, and there was some language that I struggled with, as well as different languages. When I read the ending, it moved me to the point of tears.
