Sid, Gordano School

Beck

I enjoyed this book enormously. Mal Peet's stark, beautiful writing perfectly describes the plight of 'coloured people' in Prohibition-era Canada. Peet doesn't pull any punches, describing events in blunt language and leaving nothing to the imagination. One reason why I love this novel is that it avoids cliches and is full of clever description and scenes that are different from many historical novels, making it a very interesting read.
