The Hate U Give
Filled to the brim with popular culture and very real humour, The Hate U Give brings people who live a life a world away from drugs, and gunfights, and a 'ghetto' right into the middle of it, into the life of Starr Carter. She lives two people - Maverick-who-works-in-the-store's daughter, 'hood' Starr, who raps and swears and is almost the complete opposite of Williamson Starr, the smart, quiet wicked basketball player who is totally tight with Hailey and Maya, at the posh predominantly white private school she attends. And Starr feels as though that's the way it has to be, because how could she mix the two worlds? And then her childhood friend is shot right in front of her, and Starr has to work up the courage to fight for justice.
This book dragged me into Starr's worlds, and I can't even begin to describe how much I loved it there.
