Salt to the Sea
The book I read is entitled “Salt to the Sea”. This book includes perspectives from different points of view of 4 young adults trying to survive the Second World War. It is based on a real event that happened in 1945 while Germans were trying to evacuate East Prussia with 4 ships. This was called “Operation Hannibal”. Unfortunately, one of the ships, the Wilhelm Gustloff, sank bringing with it an estimated total of 9,500 people. The story leads the reader through the journey of each of these 4 main characters to the ship and the dreaded sinking. It is a fantastic story which is often not known.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book although at the start, I didn’t find it engaging so I thought I wouldn’t like it very much. The reason for this is that it had very short chapters (if they can be called so!) from different people’s points of view that had nothing to do with each other. This was quite confusing because it felt as if I was reading 4 different books. I started liking the book when some of the people met having the same goal making the book much more interesting and less confusing.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 because it was quite confusing at the start but had a nice ending and taught me a new historical fact.
