Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth is an upbeat and quirky fictional novel. It tells the story of a teenage boy named Prez. He lives in a temporary shelter and is sent from home to home after being taken away from his grandfather's care.
Whilst at the Blythes' household, a strange visitor arrives. Prez sees Sputnik as an alien but everyone around him is fixated on the fact that he is a dog. Along the course of the novel, we learn more about how Prez must save the Earth from being cleared out. To complete this fateful task, he must find ten things Sputnik deems to be worthy of keeping.
Their friendship evolves greatly and Prez is finally reunited with his grandfather.
The book is very humorous and the sensitive subjects like dementia are mixed in with the bizarre adventures. The result is an easy, fun and intricately crafted plot.
Overall, I think this book is so well made and heartwarming, that even 10-year-olds could appreciate the story line.
