Salma, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
Although the recommended age range is 9-11 years, I think that this book, with its meaningful final message, would be suitable for any age. It is witty, enjoyable and easy to read, as well as tackling issues such as amnesia and family. The characters are very real, except Sputnik himself, who provides the comic relief and inspires the reader with his fresh take on life on Earth. The issues that the book deals with are translated into language easy for children to understand as well as the final message that applies to everyday life. It was great fun to read as some of the scenes are extremely imaginative and humourous; they ‘hook’ the reader as they cannot wait for what Sputnik will come up with next. I would recommend to any age group for its warm tone and its linear albeit touching storyline.
