Isabella, Myton 2018 Shadowers
After reading this book, I conclude that Rook explores the relationship between new class identities and adolescent culture.
With diverse influences and ideas, new tensions are generated in this family beautifully crafted by Anthony McGowan, from both simple and complex dialogues.
As a student I have been fascinated by the ephemeral nature of reputation and teenage relationships. What starts out as a bitter jealousy and pain for the protagonist soon becomes corroded into a hegemony of shocking discoveries as Nicky is overwhelmed from his own decisions, with the book finishing a note of failure in understanding and the prospect of a new outlook.
As a family recovering from pain and misunderstanding is skilfully echoed in Nicky's own perspective in the plot, the reader is left with a quiet question to the roots of our own attitude to those around us.
