Salt to the Sea

Salt to the Sea is a frustrating and predictable novel, based on four refugees from the Second World War named Florian, Emelia, Joanna and Alfred. It's set in 1945, when Adolf Hitler is losing the war and fighting it out with the Russians, causing many civilian casualties. However, its many characters are bland, resulting in a dull novel lacking substance. It's so poor that even its powerful message and plot can't make up for its dreary tone. I would improve it by making it fast-moving and adding a few more twists to the plot. Secondly, it needs fewer characters, because it's hard to keep up with and I found myself tracking back to get a better understanding of the plot.
