Ms McCabe, Brooke Weston Academy
Salt to the Sea
A beautifully written piece of historical fiction inspired by the real-life, often overlooked, tragedy that was the sinking of the ship the Wilhelm Gustloff on 30th January 1945 during the closing months of WWII. The story is told in alternating perspectives from four different characters that include Joana a Lithuanian nurse, Emilia a pregnant Polish girl, Florian a Prussian thief and Alfred a German soldier. The story follows each character as they and thousands of refugees make the journey towards the Wilhelm Gustloff which appears to them to be their only chance of escaping and survival from the advancing Russian army. It's a story full of suspense and intrigue, expertly researched and with characters you will come to care about.
