Salt to the Sea
'Salt To The Sea' is a novel based on a real life disaster during World War 2. The story is told by four main characters: Alfred, Florian, Emilia and Joana who are trying to flee war-torn Germany. They are all hoping to board the Wilhelm Gustloff, and sail to safety and freedom, but hope isn’t always enough. It is quite difficult to read at the start as every chapter is written by a different character. However, as the novel goes on and the characters start to meet you learn a lot more about their individual personalities.
I chose to read this book as I do not usually read novels based in the war. The front cover was gripping. The birds which would usually made us think of peace were contrasted with the barbed wire which makes us think of prison so it added to the intrigue.
My favourite character would have to be Joana as I feel she is under pressure throughout the novel. Not only is she a nurse, but she takes on responsibility for the younger characters. She is also very nice and accepts everyone even Emilia (a Polish girl).
Overall, I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars. It kept my attention after a slow start and taught me a lot about what happened during World War 2 for young people. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves to read. This novel definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf.
