Miss Pearson, Neston Book Club
I am conficted by Beck. On one hand it is an incredible work, beautifully imagined with bursts of writing that left me in awe. On the other hand, it is entirely innappropriate! This is an adult book. It depicts scenes of abuse that I could barely read and didn't want to read. If it wasn't for the shadowing scheme with book club I would not have finished the book (which would have been a shame)because I found the abuse too graphic and brutal. The details described would never be shown in a film for the same audience. This book is not a children's book and should not be considered as one.
As an adult book it was brilliant, brutal, but brilliant. The characterisation was realistic and sparking with originality. I loved that Beck was humanised by his errors, misunderstandings and flaws.
