The Smell of Other People's Houses
I have just finished reading the excellent, amazing book “The Smell of Other People's Houses. It was written by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock and it was first-person narration. It was originally published in 2016. This is an outstanding story set in Alaska, in a town called Fairbanks,in 1970. The front cover and the title were really unique and attractive. I found the title “The Smell of Other People’s Houses” intriguing and fascinating; it gripped me and it made me curious to know what this book was about. The story is told from 4 special, main characters who come from different backgrounds and families: Ruth, Dora, Alyce and Hank. There are other important characters such as Dumpling, Selma, Gran, Sam, Jack and many more. In my opinion, the author was very successful in making the reader curious and tense because at the end of every chapter, the author creates suspense and makes us very nervous. It is very hard to tell a story in different perspectives without confusing the reader, but Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock has done this very clearly without confusing the reader. There are no pictures or images in this book. However, you can imagine how the character looked just by reading the descriptions, which are very precise and accurate. Moreover, there is a Q&A at the end of the book which I found really useful. Even though this was the author’s first book, it seems like she is a very experienced writer. Despite the fact I know the plot is fiction, I felt sad when the characters were sad and I was happy when the characters were happy. My favourite character was Ruth and I started crying when she was struggling so much in her life. I really, really loved the whole story, but my favourite part of the book was when Ruth and Hank met at the abbey. I loved reading this book and I would definitely recommend it to one of my friends. I would rate this book 10/10 and I would love to read more books from Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock.
