Mrs McMordie-Jackson, St Peter's School
The Bone Sparrow
This is a really moving book. I think when you start reading it you quickly sense that something bad is going to happen - the sense of menace is really well done. The main characters are really likeable and believable. The book is very clever in that you start out thinking that you know which character has the greatest disadvantages in life, but you gradually see that everything is not rosy for the other characters too. One of the most moving things about this book is that this really happens. My daughter read it too and we had some really good conversations about in what ways we are very lucky and about how this goes on all across the world. Very thought-provoking!
