Ms Mellor, Queensbury Academy

The Hate U Give

Already a favourite with the group. A welcome and entirely convincing insight into the human cost of contemporary poverty and racial prejudice. We are more than observers in this novel: Angie Thomas puts the reader behind the eyes and mind of the protagonist. The portrayal of the complexity of the extended family, and the practical and moral struggles of decent people trying to live an honest life, are exceptional. The writing and language is uncompromising, taking the reader directly to the loving and beating heart of the family and the community. Critics may feel that the ending is rushed, but the focus of the novel is the road to the trial, not the trial itself. An exceptional book.
