Elsie, James Gillespie's Shadowers
The Bone Sparrow
'The Bone Sparrow' is one of my favourites this year on the Carnegie List. It is mostly told from the point of view of Subhi, a refugee, but interestingly switches to his friend Jimmie's point of view throughout the book. 'The Bone Sparrow' is a very captivating tale, based on many people's real-life situations. The start can be a bit hard to get in to, however, if you stick with it for a bit, it becomes very hard to put down! I finished this story in under three days (with about a half hour read of it each day), and despite the complicated theme to it, the plot is compelling and descriptive. The story can be a bit repetitive at times, however, the storyline flows quickly and smoothly, with just the right amount of character and flow to it. The characters are engaging, and I really liked all the little illustrations at the start of each chapter. Overall, I rate this book a 9/10, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading!
