The Bone Sparrow
The Bone Sparrow is set in Australia although it took me a long while to work it out. It is told by two people Subhi and Jimmie. Subhi lives inside a refugee camp and has known nothing else as he was born inside the camp and he only knows what his mother has told him about life outside the camp. In the camp he has a friend called Eli who is 16 and he later on becomes one of the main points in the plot. Jimmie lives on the outside and her mum has died leaving her with her father and brother.
My favourite character was the Shakespeare duck that Subhi has and talks to as I found it very adorable. I felt that all the characters were well developed and you really got to know them as the book progressed.
The setting was quite unclear but that did not really make a difference because it wasn't the focus of the book and the book was more about the refugees who traveled there hoping for a better life but ending up in a camp where they are treated poorly.
The plot was well constructed and there was a constant flow of events as you read through the book. I found the ending quite upsetting but very realistic.
This book really made me think about the poor refugees who flee their homes but then get no better once they arrive hoping for a better life.
