The Marvels

You either see it or you don’t

The Marvels
By Brian Selznick

I have already read this book for the guardian young critics award this is my review from that.
This was an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable book, containing two thrilling stories about the mysterious Marvel family. One was told through pictures and the other by words, this book was: the New York Times number one best seller, the USA today best seller, was a Caldecott Medal winner and a National book award finalist.
I found it really intriguing that the first of the stories was told in elaborate black and white drawings and going back to that story to find the hidden details that I‘d missed was, which made me feel as if I were the character finding out the mysteries that intertwine the two stories.
Joseph’s parents are constantly traveling to exotic locations, leaving him at his cursed school. This story is about when he runs away to find his uncle Albert in London after his best friend (Blink) leaves school, the story takes you through what happens when he arrives in London and unravels the truth about his uncle’s house and an acting family named the Marvels with the help of his new found friend Frankie, who thinks her dead brother is connected to the house.
My favourite character is Uncle Albert as he carries with him an aura of mystery and a heavy amount of secrets hidden within the walls of his house, which seems to be trapped in time. He is very secretive and doesn’t let Joseph touch anything; even if he is just trying to be helpful. Alberts house always seems to Joseph as if it is trapped in time and that the family inside just disappeared.
Don’t be put off by the size as almost three quarters of this book is pictures but the writing is gripping and I would recommend it to anyone who likes an unexpected plot twist, actors, clues and tiny hidden details you can’t find unless you look for them.
