Mrs. Pollard, Chobham Academy Book Group
This book was described by The Times as 'Harper Lee has a worthy successor' and they were not wrong. Annabelle's quiet life takes on a new dimension when Betty Glengarry arrives at school and makes life difficult with her bullying and threats. Tragedy strikes with Betty's disappearance after making accusations against loner and war veteran Toby, an oddity in the community. Annabelle seeks to make things right and one theme in the story is that you cannot control situations or make them come out right however hard you try. Similarities to To Kill a Mockingbird are evident with characters Annabelle and Scout, also Toby and Boo. I enjoyed this book with its very believable characters and setting, it drew you into the close knit community.
