Salt to the Sea
Another cracking read from Ruta Sepetys! Without realising it you are learning about a little known part of history as you get drawn into another captivating story. I enjoyed her previous short lister Between Shades of Grey and this read was even better. Set in 1945 four young people each with their own back story and secrets come together as they head to Gotenhafen to hopefully board a refugee ship to Kiel in Germany. They board the Wilhelm Gustloff whose sinking was a bigger tragedy than that of the Titanic but not many people know about it. I loved the characters who were so well thought out and written; you were drawn into the worlds of Florian, Joana, Emilia with her pink hat and the rather strange Alfred living in his fantasy world of self importance.Besides the four main leads we have the Shoe Poet and Klaus the little orphan he has become Opi to, big Eva who is keen to keep hold of the family silver on the cart and Ingrid who masks her blindness from those who would prevent her accessing the refugee ships. This book would be a worthy winner!
