Ms Mellor, Queensbury Academy
A real challenger for this year's award. Mal Peet's writing has many strengths: humour, humanity, and truthfulness. In Beck, as in all his work, he does not condescend to his young audience, or shy away from describing for them some of the evils of the world. Yet, through all of Beck's agonies and hardships, there is a clear message that, even at the darkest moments, courage and love will prevail. What a talent we have lost. We must be grateful to both Meg Rosoff and Elspeth Graham-Peet for ensuring that this superb book has reached its target.
