Mrs Jones, Stockport Grammar School
Annabelle is 12 and has had a sheltered upbringing in Wolf Hollow, a small town in Pennsylvania, during WW2. One day Betty arrives in town and Annabelle's world will never be the same again. Betty is a bully and Annabelle realises that the world is not always as safe or as straightforward as it had appeared. When her best friend is badly hurt and local loner Toby is implicated by Betty's lies Annabelle realises that not everyone is honest. When Betty goes missing and suspicion falls on Toby, Annabelle has to make choices- and sometimes it might be necessary to lie to find out the truth.
I liked the way Annabelle's narrative voice matures throughout the book.
Wolf Hollow is a story to make you think and it stayed with me after finishing it.
