Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
This is a hoot. Not my usual type of book AT ALL, but I know so many kids who would love this comical story. It is sweet, heartwarming, fast-paced and funny. There is a real sense of wonder at our ordinary world seen from the eyes of an alien.
The idea of mind reading and that only Prez sees Sputnik as he really is and not as a dog is ingenious.
My favourite scenes are during the 'Jailbreak' - really funny chat with the security guy and some hilarious exchanges in Tesco and outside with the treats. Read it and you will see what I mean!
The style is good - I like how, when the whole family is talking over each other at mealtimes, the text is all over the page - a great way of displaying the noise and the chaos of a family around the table.
Prez is a touching character - he is so dedicated to finding his Grandad, and yet quite likes the family he is with. He feels terribly unsettled and doesn't want to go back to the "Temporary". Lots of young people will understand these feelings.
And I like the list at end of the book - Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth - it is a clever way of reminding us of all the episodes in the story yet brings in Grandad's clearest memories of his past too. It's a great story.
