Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
Though this was a quite a childish book compared to the rest of the shortlist, Sputnik shouldn't be marked down just for that fact. I found it had quite a touching ending, and the characters, although they had simple personalities, were relatively likable.
The plot was extremely boring at first, and to be honest, it stayed that way up until the ending. There were no plot twists at all, and the aim of the character stayed the same all way through- save the world and rescue his grandfather. There wasn't an antagonist, of sorts, and it was sometimes unclear what the actual point was. However, I do admit Sputnik's use of everyday objects in strange ways was funny, though I grew enraged when the main character suddenly learned Spanish by READING THE INSTRUCTIONS OF A HOMEWORK. I mean seriously!
None of the side characters were developed fully, and most were boring. Overall, a 'meh' book with a 'nice' ending.
