I will probably make myself unpopular with our pupils by saying that this book just did not stand out for me. I have loved other work by Philip Reeve but I found it very hard to keep my concentration when reading Railhead. I think this was because I found it overly descriptive and I kept being tempted to skip sections. There was also such a huge array of characters (including those with artificial intelligence) that it was hard to keep track of them all. The plot was too long and convoluted for my liking and the ending too predictable.
Having made those rather negative points I did very much like the idea of the intergalactic trains and of futuristic concepts such as the K-Gates. I thought the ending to Part 3 was rather sad, yet well-written. This was the best part from my perspective because of the effect it had on me.
I think many young people will love the degree to which Philip Reeve has let his imagination run riot. There are no bounds to his ideas and the plot is certainly original, leaving a lasting impression.
