Maud, St Helen and St Katharine
Salt to the Sea
Salt to the sea is a very emotional book about four characters escaping war in Germany. The book is about four characters, Polish girl Emilia, nurse Joanna, artist Florian and sailor Alfred. It is written as a few pages at a time in the view of a particular character before changing to another. I found that this is one of my favourite books I have ever read. I usually don't love war stories, but this book was very gripping! Beware: have a box of tissues at the ready! The books twist and turns explore the tragedy of the war and leaves you shocked for a while!
Overtime the book gets sadder and sadder. I liked the descriptions used, however the author used "delirious" a lot and I found it would have added more affect to the book if they used a variety of words for delirious. The book was well researched and the advents worked well. I found that this was one of the few books that made me emotional! I recommend trying to read it in chunks because you can get a bit lost if you don't pay attention.
Although overall the book was good, I found I skimmed through Alfred's letters. I felt as though he was not entirely necessary in the book as he only met the other characters towards the end. However, I am glad that whenever the characters spoke a short phrase in another language it had translations below.
I found that this book was very good. I give it 8/10 stars! I think that this is one of the few books you feel that is ok to cry about. Thank you for your time, I hope this has helped you decide whether or not you want to read the book.
