Mrs Dougall, Charter School
First and foremost, this book is not going to be suitable for most of our KS3 students. As beautiful as it is, the story is harrowing and highly adult in its content.
Having said that, I enjoyed this novel immensely. It is always difficult to finish a novel started by someone else, but I honestly couldn't tell where Mal Peet's writing ended and Meg Rosoff's began.
The story encompasses a variety of genre; deviating from the traditional coming-of-age novel, it crosses into adventure, historical fiction and even romance, albeit a very unconventional one!
Overall, I would heartily recommend this book, but feel that it has been mis-categorised and is more suitable for adults.
