The Smell of Other People's Houses
Today I will talk about a book about called The Smell of Other people's houses. This book was pretty good. This book tells the interconnected stories of four teenagers – Ruth, Dora, Alyce and Hank – who pass the baton of the story between them as they come of age against the epic backdrop of Alaska.
In this book, Ruth and her younger sister are brought up by a stern Catholic grandmother in the small town of Fairbanks, Dora has an abusive father and a hopeless mother who is happiest drinking in the local bar. This book allows individual stories to emerge while strongly evoking the spirit of place.
