The Stars at Oktober Bend
Alice and Manny both know what it is like to be damaged. Alice from an horrific brain injury; Manny from being conscripted as a child soldier. Alice's speech is slow, which is reflected in the way language is used to voice her viewpoint, but in her mind and her thoughts she wants to fly. Alice expresses her feelings in poems which she secretes around the neighbourhood. To Manny she is beautiful but it is difficult for them to get close enough to even begin to be friends. In addition to the physical problems there are the added complications of racial and class prejudice. But, become friends they do. This book is the story of healing; of memories exposed and trust regained.
