Leonara, St Helen and St Katharine

Salt to the Sea

This story is based on the tragic disaster; the Wilhelm Gustloff a ship which sailed in 1945 (WWII still going). Millions of evacuees travelled huge journeys to this ship in the hope that it would save them.
It is written from the perspective of different people: Joana- a nurse who is living with a hoard of evacuees, and who later falls in love with Florian; Florian- a young Prussian who carries in his bag a hugely valuable piece of artwork he stole from the amber room after discovering his employee was using him, he develops a romantic relationship with Joana; Emilia- a 15 year old Polish girl who is pregnant after being raped by a Russian soldier; and Alfred- a German soldier who adores Adolf Hitler and thinks very highly of himself, he thinks of writing to a girl he knows (or used to know) but is too scared to actually write anything .
This book made me cry, it was so sad and beautifully written. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an emotional read.
