Josie, St Helen and St Katharine
The Smell of Other People's Houses
The structure is alternating narrative, but the author brings all of the character's stories together. A particularly memorable bit is when Ruth enters the ice going into the sea competition (in the competition contestants enter the exact time and day that the ice from upriver goes into the sea. If you win, you get 10,000 dollars,) and she wins it. The story that is my favourite is Alyce's, especially when she saves one of Hank's brothers from drowning.
This book was quite dramatic, and very good. I would give it 8/10
